Do you know that feeling? When even a walk in the park can be draining…
That moment when you’re trying to get someone to do something, and it just feels like dragging a boulder uphill? The convincing, the pushing, the forcing—it’s exhausting, right?
Let me tell you about a moment we can all relate to.
It was a sunny afternoon, and my kids were with their grandparents. The plan was simple—a nice walk in the park. But if you’ve got kids, especially teens and little ones, you know what’s coming. When their grandparents said, “Let’s go for a walk,” the response was… nothing.
They tried again. And again. But still—no movement. The teenagers were busy with their phones, and my youngest was wrapped up in his own world.
Then came the next step—the old-school approach. “That’s it! Put your shoes on, we’re going for a walk NOW!”
And yes, the kids moved, but not without resistance.
But here’s where it gets interesting.
In the middle of this, I got a phone call from my kids.
They didn’t want to go for a walk.
They were frustrated, bored, and resisting.
So I listened, and then I offered something different.
I said: “Hey, how about you go on a treasure hunt? You can find cool leaves, bring them home, and we’ll make some awesome art with them. You can paint, color, and create something magical. How does that sound?”
Suddenly, their mood shifted. They were excited. They went for the walk, found their “treasure,” and came back happy and energised.
Use your creativity to fulfil “clients” needs and your own with joy – Lets go for a treasure hunt – kids are always ready to play and always will… same with us.
But we’ve forgotten about the joy along the work.
I know you know that feeling of excitement, and joy when you are full in and in the flow….
That’s how the work and life should feel as well.
This is the difference between force and inspiration.
When you force someone, you get resistance. When you inspire someone, you create excitement.
They move, not because they have to, but because they want to.
And don’t get me wrong—I’ve been on the other side too. I used to be there, pushing, convincing, trying to make things happen with force.
No judgment. It’s how many of us learned to lead—by demanding action, raising our voices, and using pressure.
But today, I know better. Today, I know my “clients” (my kids in that case).
I know what drives them, and I know how to talk to them.
Think about how often this happens in your life.
How many times have you tried to push someone—your team, your family, even yourself—into action?
You push harder, get frustrated, and the results are… well, less than ideal.
It’s exhausting. And the more you push, the more resistance you get. But when you lead with inspiration, everything changes.
You’re not forcing people forward—you’re inviting them into an experience they actually want to have.
This is the new way of leading—through joy and inspiration, not force and pressure.
When you understand what makes people tick—whether it’s your team at work or your kids at home—you can lead effortlessly. You know what excites them, and you use that to invite them to take action, not because they have to, but because they want to.
In my work, I teach leaders how to inspire action, and make change easy, not force it.
Knowing “what makes people tick” is crucial as well as using creativity as a powerhouse.
